The Digital Age

We are in the midst of transitioning from the industrial era to the digital era. What can we expect to happen over the next decade or two? Here is what I think will happen in regards to jobs. More and more industrial jobs will disappear and be replaced my digital jobs. Industrial jobs are those that require little skill or experience and, as my wife likes to put it, more brawn than brain. Digital jobs will require more skill and experience plus they will use more mental ability than physical ability. Now more than ever people will need to have a skill to be successful. What kind of skill? Anything having to do with technology or computers. Programing, using, or fixing computers will be in demand. Using specific applications or platforms will also be in demand.

More important than any skill though, will be the ability to learn. We are entering an age in which change will be the norm. What is hot today, will be cold tomorrow. What is in demand for now, will not be for long. The only way to thrive in the digital environment is to be able to learn and keep learning. Unfortunately our education system has no idea how to produce learners. The just produce followers, people who do what they are told. so what is the sollution? It is for individuals to take responsibility for their own well being and learn how to learn. Then keep learning as things change, and change they will.

What do you think?
